MNH Acceleration Plan highlights
Common to Yemen North and Yemen South:
Develop a national set of maternal and newborn health indicators and integrate it into the national health information system.
Develop the national midwifery strategy.
Improve access to a quality maternal and neonatal care services for low resources populations patients: scale up performance-based finance programmes, including voucher programmes, support critical emergency obstetrics and newborn care hospitals to provide free of charge health services to mothers with complications and sick newborns.
Increase service coverage in hard-to-reach areas: deploy maternal and newborn mobile teams quarterly, based in remote areas; dialogue with community on establishing transport means in hard to reach areas.
Count every mother and newborn through measurement, programme tracking and accountability. Collect data and report on stillbirths and birth abnormalities.
Set an emergency coordination team within the Ministry of Public Health and Population that will be responding on maternal and newborn health issues during emergencies
Support the establishment of a budget line within the emergency and response plan for maternal and newborn health life-saving commodities.
Establish a national integrated procurement system.
Quality of care in Yemen (common to South and North)
As part of its efforts to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and stillbirths, Yemen is taking steps to improve the quality of maternal and newborn health. (Link to the quality of care internal page). These include:
Set quality criteria for the delivery of healthcare services to newborns, at each level of health system (Community, PHC, BEmOC and CEmONC)
Conduct quality improvement program in all selected HFs according to standards;
Conduct in-service training for Midwives/Doctors on all MNH Guidelines (EmONC, CBMNC, FP, KMC, ENC, Referral,,,,ect
Strengthening the capacity of HFs for provision of EmONC services.
Procure and distribute the essential equipment, and procure life-saving EmONC drugs and contraceptives and distribute to HFs. Ensure maintenance of equipment.
Strengthen the capacity of Neonatal Care Units at selected referral hospitals through provision of equipment and life-saving drugs
Strengthening maternal and newborn death surveillance system and Activate the MPNDSRat facility level and Develop the MPNDSR at Community level
Advocacy on the development of the MPNDSR
Development of a communication and advocacy plan to improve the maternal and newborn health-related family practices with special focus on improving breastfeeding practices
Identify focal persons among influential leaders to advocate for MCH;
Conduct annual advocacy campaign for MNCH care with slogan“ Together For Saving Mothers and Children Lives
